Victoria Falls is an impressive waterfall that is found in southern Africa on the border of the countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia. There is also a town named after it that is found near the falls. Victoria Falls can be viewed from the Zimbabwe side and is actually considered to be the largest waterfall in the world. It is 1708 m wide and 108 m high. Victoria Falls is in fact almost double the height of America’s Niagara Falls. It is also known as “Mosi-oa-Tunya” which when translated means “The smoke that thunders.” The waterfall can be heard from a long distance away and the force of the water causes a large amount of spray to be thrown into the air. Victoria Falls was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1989. The falls is on the Zambezi river and the flow rate is an astonishing 1088 cubic meters per second. There is certainly good reason to make a trip to see this amazing waterfall.
A Popular Destination
Victoria Falls is not surprisingly a very popular tourist attraction with more than 400,000 people visiting the falls every year. If you want to visit Victoria Falls then you may want to know when the best time to go is.
The best time depends on what you plan for your trip. If you want to do a Chobe river safari and see Victoria Falls, then the best time to go would be the dry season which is in winter and extends from the months of June through to August. There will still be enough water for Victoria Falls to be impressive and the water level on the Chobe River will not be so high as to make taking a trip down it too dangerous. You may also be able to go on a safari as well during this time of year.
If your sole focus is on looking at the Falls, then the wet season is fine, but you will not be able to take a river trip as the water will be too high and rough. You may also not be able to take a safari during the wet season, but this is something you can investigate as it is likely that safari trips and times will vary according to what country you plan to visit for the safari. The Falls will certainly be the most spectacular during the wet season as there will be the maximum amount of water flowing through them.
It is not a good idea to visit the waterfall at the end of the dry winter season. These are the months of October through November. The problem is that it will be very dry and hot, and you may find that the Falls are not very impressive. You also will not see much from the Zambian side of the Falls.
Using our advice, you can plan your trip for the best possible time to see Victoria Falls, depending on what your travel itinerary is.
